PUBLISHER'S PERSPECTIVE MAC LACY CELEBRATING THE GIFT OF ART W hat is it about great art that transforms a city? A better question might be, what is it about great art that transforms us? Most of us are occasionally mesmerized by the talent of an artist who creates something so beautiful that we can't express why it moves us as it does. Something you cannot describe to another person becomes very personal. For most of us, great art reaches that realm. Alice Walton obviously understands that and has given Bentonville, Arkansas, a gift that other cities its size will never enjoy. Many of us in this industry now know the story of Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville. Walton is an heiress to the Wal-Mart fortune that was created when her father, Sam Walton, built the world's largest retail company. Thus, she had the means to visit the world's greatest collections of art. At some point, she decided to create one more in her small hometown in western Arkansas. Completed in 2011, Crystal Bridges has transformed that city. Not only has the spectacular museum drawn hundreds of thousands of visitors to Bentonville, but it now has also inspired the addition of a 21c Museum Hotel there. 21c Museum Hotels can be credited with creating the brilliant merger of art and accommodations. In Bentonville, groups can enjoy a hotel where contemporary art melds with cutting-edge architecture to yield a guest experience that is unforgettable. Bentonville will never be the same. 6 BANK TRAVEL M A N A G E M E N T S E P T E M B E R / O C T O B E R 2 0 1 3
